John McClain talks Texans; Jeremy Branham talks University of Houston Football & Basketball

Welcome to Episode 69! This week, Chron’s John McClain and Sports Radio 610’s Jeremy Branham join us to talk Houston sports on The Weekly Brew, the Voice of Houston.

John McClain is no stranger to The Weekly Brew, having joined us on no fewer than four other occasions. He calls in to talk a little Texans, a little Baylor, this and that. Listen, the guy is one of the most veteran, locked-in voices in Houston sports, and he can talk whatever he wants, even if he does throw cold water on the Chad Morris-to-Baylor storyline.

Jeremy Branham is also an old friend of the show. He is a sideline reporter for UH Football, and he shares some insights from the huge upset victory over Louisville Thursday, and delves into Tom Herman’s future with the team and the impact of yet another UH victory over a top-5 squad. Branham is also now the play-by-play voice of UH Cougar Basketball, and will be hosting coach’s shows with Kelvin Sampson every week, and he talks a little bit about what to expect from the team this season (hint: NCAA Tournament berth) and the long-term trajectory of the program under Coach Sampson (hint: future is bright).

As usual, terrific guests with terrific takes get into anything and everything Houston sports. That’s, after all, why we’re the Voice of Houston (according to us, and we would know: we are the Voice of Houston), and to the listeners, we say both thank you and you’re welcome.

But hark – there is one thing you can do for us, and in fact, should. In these uncertain times, people look to symbols of certainty and stability, and for a podcast, that equates to iTunes reviews. We need them. Go to iTunes and click Ratings and Reviews and leave a 5-star review with a little blurb (if you’re on a mobile device, use the magnifying glass in the podcast app to search for The Weekly Brew, and you can do it from there), and we will actually read it aloud to our thousands of listeners. And you’ll be our favorite listener of the week, like, UHCoog2010 is this week.

And remember guys, no matter who you are, where you go or what you do, always, ALWAYS brew responsibly.

Mike Renner of Pro Football Focus talks Texans, Houston Cougars, Baylor Bears football; Les Miles fired at LSU

Welcome to the 62nd episode of The Weekly Brew podcast, the Voice of Houston. For the first time ever, news breaks AS the guys are recording the episode, with LSU letting Les Miles go after a lackluster 2-2 start to the season. The guys react to the news while breaking down the most recent results in the college football pick-em contest (Kevin and Austin are tied for the lead after a big week from Kevin).

The guys also discuss a bit of Rockets, as the team recently traded Michael Beasley to the Milwaukee Bucks for point guard Tyler Ennis, who figures to be a facilitator and a piece that, in Mike D’Antoni’s system, has a tremendous amount of upside. While not what you might call a ‘blockbuster’ trade, hey – it’s just good to have some hometown basketball to talk about.

Finally, Mike Renner – a senior analyst for Pro Football Focus and a columnist for the Washington Post – joins the show to inject some analytical perspective into the discussion surrounding the Texans and University of Houston Cougars.

Renner analyzes the upsetting, unsettling 27-0 loss to the Patriots Thursday night before giving some consideration to what we’ve learned, in three games, about Brock Osweiler as the signal-caller for the Texans. Renner shares some insight into the DeAndre Hopkins/Will Fuller wideout tandem and what their production means for the offense going forward.

Renner also delves into FBS Football, breaking down the seemingly unstoppable Houston Cougars and especially the contributions of dark-horse Heisman candidate starting quarterback Greg Ward Jr.

Finally, the guys rejoice because, hark, there appeareth an iTunes review. For the first time in what seems like forever, one of the many thousands of listeners actually stopped, took 5 seconds and wrote a review, and it was a great one. TechnoCoog is our listener of the week… maybe listener of the month if we don’t get some more reviews coming in. It’s very easy. If you can’t figure out how to do it, call Kevin at home, and he’ll walk you through it.

And as always, folks, please remember: No matter who you are, where you go or what you do, always, ALWAYS brew responsibly.
