Texans & NFL Draft Recap; Matt Weston of Battle Red Blog and Sean Pendergast of Sports Radio 610 break down the draft; Daniel Eyes & The Vibes at the Nightingale Room

Welcome to this, the 41st episode of The Weekly Brew podcast. It’s a big week for the NFL, with the 2016 Draft just concluded, and we visited with Matt Weston of Battle Red Blog and Sean Pendergast of Sports Radio 610 to make sense of all the action.

First, Sean Pendergast, host of The Triple Threat on Sports Radio 610, joins us for a spirited discussion of the draft from a more global perspective. Pendergast believes the Texans, Jaguars and Titans all drafted well, and the AFC South should be a more competitive division for it. Pendergast also ponder the perplexing Laremy Tunsil Twitter hack incident and examines the woeful Browns, and what we can expect from RGIII in Cleveland.

Next, Matt Weston calls in to share some of his expertise on the Houston Texans’ draft picks: Will Fuller (WR, Notre Dame), Nick Martin (C, Notre Dame), Braxton Miller (WR, Ohio State), Tyler Ervin (RB, San Jose State), K.J. Dillon (S, West Virginia) and D.J. Reader (DT, Clemson). It’s an offense-heavy draft for the Texans, and Weston examines the incoming talent and how well they’re going to be able to mesh with free-agency acquisition, QB Brock Osweiler. Weston says if Osweiler can be a top-10 quarterback, the Texans are likely favorites to make the Super Bowl.

Finally, Daniel Eyes and Dylan Stephens of Austin-based Daniel Eyes & the Vibes, call in ahead of their May 5 show at The Nightingale Room with friends of the show, Second Lovers. They discuss their striking aesthetic, meteoric rise in the Austin music scene and some of their musical influences before getting into the upcoming show, which all podcast listeners should make a point to go to.

And, for the first time in WAY too long, we have an iTunes review! Thanks to PuppetCartel for weighing in and becoming our Listener of the Week. It’s not hard to become Listener of the Week. Just go to our iTunes page, click Ratings and Reviews, and leave a 5-star review with a nice, little blurb about the show – what you enjoy and what you’d like to hear – and we’ll read it on the air next week. Those help us grow! And so does sharing our content on Twitter, Facebook or any other platform you choose (hell, email links to our website to people, if that’s how you want to do it). Those of you who share are the real heroes, and we appreciate you for it. And remember: no matter who you are, where you go or what you do this week, always, ALWAYS brew responsibly.

Astros + MLB preview w/ MLB.com’s Richard Justice; Final Four; Second Lovers’ Thom Truver

On this 37th episode of The Weekly Brew podcast, MLB.com columnist Richard Justice calls us to talk Astros in celebration of Opening Day, Kevin shares some Charles Barkley audio from his Final Four coverage and friend of the show Thom Truver, of Houston indie rock group Second Lovers, talks making music and the upcoming Art Blocks festival.

Kevin is more or less indisposed this week, spending most of his waking hours at NRG Stadium watching and covering the Final Four, but he stops in for a brief visit to share some amusing Charles Barkley anecdotes and discuss the historic 44-point shellacking Villanova inflicted on poor Oklahoma in the semifinals.

Next, Richard Justice of MLB.com shares his expertise and insight on the Astros in celebration of Opening Day. Justice believes the ‘Stros are the team to be in the AL West, with an exciting young roster peppered with talent like Carlos Correa and George Springer (Justice says this is “Springer’s clubhouse”). He breaks down the acquisition of Ken Giles from the Phillies and how that plays into a strong pitching rotation bolstered by hometown favorite Dallas Keuchel and Collin McHugh. Justice also expresses optimism about the Cubs season and cautions against buying into the curse of the billy goat.

Finally, it’s the second go-round for Second Lovers. This time, lead guitarist and (relative) newlywed Thom Truver shares some exciting details about the upcoming Art Blocks: Big Bash, featuring Second Lovers and The Suffers, shares some details about how to honeymoon like a rockstar and breaks down how he came to be part of one of the Houston music scene’s most exciting, up-and-coming groups.
